King Abdullah - the first king of the modern incarnation of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan that was created from the breakup of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I -had this mosque built in 1924 on the site of an ancient mosque that was built here in the 7th century, just a few years after Islam came to the country. Built in Ottoman style in the heart of the old city, this is Amman's Juma (Friday) mosque. It's closed to non-Muslims. The square and the streets around the mosque make for great people-watching however.
